Description of Award
The mission of the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) is to advance the progress of medicine and improve the public's health by providing U.S. researchers, health professionals, the public health workforce, educators, and the public with equal access to biomedical and health information resources and data.
Who are we? NNLM Region 2 boasts diverse and talented professionals with backgrounds ranging from academic librarianship to public health. Together, we extend the services and programs of the NNLM and the National Library of Medicine (NLM) by partnering with health information agencies, health organizations, public health entities, community-based organizations, libraries, and the general public to offer outreach, funding opportunities, and educational programming throughout the region.
NNLM Region 2 is seeking library and information science (LIS) and data science students who want to network, learn new skills, and present professionally while learning more about health sciences librarianship and outreach!
Whether you’re interested in health sciences librarianship, informatics, data science, or public librarianship, this program will give you a competitive edge in your job search and future career. Awardees will join NNLM Region 2 staff in attending the joint annual meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter and Southern Chapter of the Medical Library Association. You’ll get a chance to work with an NNLM Region 2 staff member, help run a booth at a professional conference, prepare and deliver a presentation to professionals in the field, and network with future colleagues.
Award Components
- Registration for the joint chapter meeting, October 27 - 30, 2024, in Charleston, South Carolina; registration fees are covered in full by this award. NOTE: This award is for in-person attendance. You must be able to travel during this time and attend the joint annual meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter and Southern Chapter of the Medical Library Association, October 27-30, 2024 in Charleston, South Carolina. Conference registration fees are covered by this award. NOTE: This award is for in-person attendance. You must be able to travel to Charleston during this time.
- Up to $3,000 for total expenses associated with travel to and from the meeting - $500 is reserved for reservation and other associated costs. R2 will cover your transportation costs and conference registration costs outright. Other associated costs will be reimbursed. Up to $3,000 for expenses associated with travel/to/from annual conference, conference registration fees, and other associated costs.
- Training on an NLM product or service
- Presentation coaching and networking opportunities with NNLM staff
- Opportunity to present and actively participate in a professional conference
- Additional professional development activity to be provided by NNLM Region 2

This program aims to introduce the future LIS workforce to the health sciences and trusted National Library of Medicine (NLM) resources and develop professional skills. With coaching from a talented NNLM professional, each awardee will deliver a lightning talk presentation or poster on an NLM resource or NNLM priority during the 2024 MAC/SCMLA Joint Annual Meeting.
Successful applicants must:
- Complete the assigned training module
- Meet virtually at least three times with assigned coach to prepare for the conference
- Deliver a brief 15- or 20-minute in-person presentation at the joint annual meeting (October 27 - 30, 2024)
- Assist with running exhibit booth at said meeting
- Write a student development report and submit to NNLM Region 2 no later than 10 days after the MAC/SCMLA joint meeting
Two (2) applicants will be selected and notified by May 31, 2024.
Students will be featured on the NNLM Region 2 social media channels. This feature will include a short bio and a professional headshot.
Library students residing in and currently attending a Library or Information Sciences program located in NNLM Region 2 (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, and US Virgin Islands) are eligible to apply. Candidates should demonstrate a passion or interest in exploring health information sciences.
Previous recipients and current recipients of the 2024 Mayo Drake Student Scholarship Award are not eligible to apply.

Additional Information
Section 508 requires that all website content be accessible to people with disabilities. This applies to Web applications, Web pages and all attached files on the intranet, as well as, internet. The National Library of Medicine is a part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Recipients of National Library of Medicine funding through the NNLM must meet all requirements under Section 508. Information on 508 Compliance
Recipients of NNLM funding are required to deposit any peer-reviewed manuscript upon acceptance for publication in PubMed Central in accordance with the NIH Public Access Policy.
To facilitate the dissemination of knowledge and information associated with the NNLM Cooperative Agreement Award, all subawardees are required to share any data or training material resulting from funding. This information must be submitted to the following collection sites as applicable:
- Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) website;
- Other websites specifically designated by the NLM as part of the Network of the National Library of Medicine (considering changes in the project and data repositories required to maintain sharing within the Network).
In addition, recipients of funding are expected to use or adapt existing training materials before developing new materials. Consult with your RML/Office and the NNLM Training Office (NTO) prior to developing materials
Per Section 8.2.1. - Right in Data (Publication and Copyrighting) of the NIH Grants Policy Statement. The NIH must be given a royalty-free, nonexclusive, and irrevocable license for the Federal government to reproduce, publish, or otherwise use any materials developed as a result of funding and to authorize others to do so for Federal purposes, i.e. the ongoing development of the Network of the National Library of Medicine. Data developed by a subawardees/consortium participants and consultants are also subject to this policy.
Any resources developed with project funds must include an acknowledgment of NIH grant support and a disclaimer. Please consult with your RML/Office for the specific acknowledgment statement to be used for your project award
Application Review and Scoring Criteria
Criteria for selection include: applicant’s interest in health sciences (3 points); applicant’s interest in attending this conference (3 points); how opportunity enhances their professional areas of interest (3 points); clear endorsement in recommendation letter (3 points); and overall writing quality (3 points).
Applications will be reviewed by NNLM Region 2 and Region 3 staff. Responses are ranked from “0” (No justification) to “3” (Compelling, specific justification). The applications will be given a score (0-15) based on the listed evaluation criteria in this RFA. The two (2) highest scoring applications will be funded.
