Data Ethics
Definition
A branch of ethics that encompasses the ethical issues related to data, including but not limited to the collection, storage, dissemination, reuse, and aggregation of data. Building on information ethics and technology ethics, it addresses questions related to data privacy, ownership, governance, transparency, and more.
Examples
An example of a data ethics dilemma would be: You have access to detailed evaluation data through a library vendor, but that data was not collected according to the American Library Association’s Code of Ethics. Do you use that evaluation data to improve your services or not?
