Nursing and Academic Success: Advancing health literacy and nursing education through student-led curriculum workshops

The Southern CT State University (SCSU) Department of Nursing (DN) and the Center for Academic Success and Accessibility Services (CASAS) propose a Health Information Outreach project that will advance health information resources in Minority university students and encourage the use of reliable NLM databases when searching for health information. It will also provide ongoing support for students through the aid of academic peer mentors, a method promoted by experts in order to support Minority students are they pursue careers in nursing. The project’s first phase will involve inviting nursing student to participate in the DN and CASAS Coaching program. Once the students have been selected and the coaches have been hired, second phase of the program will begin. This phase involves having a “train the trainee” session with an NLM-R7 team member, outlining the NLM- R7 resources that will be beneficial to our coaches and nursing students. The project managers will provide the peer mentors with training on topics, tools, responsibilities, and how information should be disseminated through university student organizations; the project’s third phase will involve SCSU- DN and CASAS-led focus groups conducted with nursing students and leaders of student organizations, encouraging engagement with NLM resources and laying the groundwork for ongoing, sustainable student education on health literacy and tools
