Community Engagement Coordinator - NNLM Region 3, Region 3

Margie Sheppard is the Community Engagement Coordinator for NNLM Region 3. She is based out of the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. Prior to joining NNLM she was a technology consultant for a public library system in rural Kansas. She has an undergraduate degree in Nursing and a Master's in Library Science. She teaches a variety of classes for NNLM and has a passion for connecting people with reliable health information resources.

#CiteNLM Spring 2024 Wikipedia Edit-a-thon (April 24, 2024) Join NNLM Staff on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 as we add citations to Wikipedia articles using trusted National Library of Medicine resources. This event addresses increasing health equity through information and the NNLM initiative of citizen science by engaging communities in editing Wikipedia health-related articles with well-sourced additions.
2-1-1 Texas Overview 211 Texas is a free information and resource line that is answered 24/7. With access to a language line they can help people in over 150 languages. This training will cover what 211 Texas is and explain its various features.
Expanding Claire's Community Y2 Project: Creating a Partner Violence Prevention Education Program Claire’s Community is comprehensive relationship violence prevention program created to teach safe and healthy relationship skills; engage and equip influential adults and peers; disrupt pathways to relationship violence; and create proactive, protective, and safe communities. This project was made possible from funding by NNLM Region 3 in Year 2.
Exploring Complementary and Integrative Health: Information, Resources, and Evaluation This class will explore the definitions of Complementary and Integrative Health (CIH), encompassing both Eastern and Western medicine perspectives. We will delve into various approaches to CIH, discussing their associated risks and benefits. We will also equip you with strategies to help your users discern trustworthy CIH information and avoid fraudulent claims.
Introduction to the Piecing Together Systematic Reviews Series This special edition of Health Bytes with Region 3 will introduce the upcoming Piecing Together Systematic Reviews Series. The five-part series will cover each piece of conducting a systematic review.

Providing Multilingual Health Information This 1-hour webinar is designed to assist librarians, and others who work with diverse populations, to locate health information in languages other than English. The resources presented are selected for their emphasis on providing information in the preferred language of the population. Participants will have the opportunity to become familiar with the features and scope of several Internet resources.
Wikipedia + Libraries: NNLM (March 25-April 19, 2024) Gain insight into the value of Wikipedia as a viable reference and build the skills and knowledge needed to evaluate articles, with a specific focus on health and medical topics in a self-paced, online class over four weeks. Expect to spend about 2 hours a week exploring through discussion forums, readings, tutorials, and learn about the #CiteNLM Wikipedia edit-a-thon and the free resources, programming and training that NNLM offers to libraries. This class addresses increasing health information access and use, and the NNLM initiatives of confronting health misinformation and citizen science by engaging communities in editing Wikipedia health-related articles with well-sourced additions, and gaining insight into the value of Wikipedia as a viable reference tool for health and medical topics.
